Stating My Cupcake Case

I said I'd bring cupcakes to the girls' preschool diploma day party. But what people sometimes do not understand is that when I say I will bring cupcakes, I will deliver. I will deliver cupcakes baked in my own oven (okay, yes, from a boxed mix) and decorated by my own cramping hand. If need be, I will stay up 'til one in the morning to complete this task with only amusing e-mails from Miz Barbara Jane to keep me company. I will not place the said cupcakes on throwaway serving dishes; I will arrange them on three very pretty, all-white pedestal cake plates. I will cover them loosely so as not to muss the little stars of frosting that punctuate their tops. I will drive 10 miles an hour to ensure their aesthetic safety.

I'm fully aware that hardly anyone will care, but what can I say by way of explanation? For some perverse reason, I care. Here is the exchange between me and one of the dads at the party:

The Dad: It would never occur to you, would it, to just go buy cupcakes?
Me: Well, it would occur to me, but I wouldn't do it unless some sort of emergency happened.
The Dad: Why not? I mean do the kids even give a shit? Do you think they even give a damn if you made them or if you bought them?
Me: (pointing to my daughters who are serving the cupcakes with completely exaggerated pride) Look. Look at them.
The Dad: (looking) Okay, then. Well, that's something.

There's a certain logic to my actions. I think.

That's not just "something," that's everything.

Another thing boys just don't get.

Absolutely. Kids know the difference between homemade (with love) and store bought. Oh my goodness. I can't believe someone said they didn't care.

Good for you Ver.

Well, I doubt that every kid cares, but mine do so that's reason enough for me.

In case he's reading this, I hasten to add that the dad here is an all-around good guy. Just unschooled in Cupcakes 101.

Your kids will remember the smell of the baking cupcakes that filled their dreams, and how all the cupcakes in the store never look like the ones you baked for them.

In fact, there are peeps out there who are psychotic because their Moms never baked cupcakes -- like me....Or so that's my latest rationale because it amuses Moi....

Hmmm...I think I'll try to bake cupcakes this week for Achilles and Gabriela -- I'm sure that if they don't appreciate it, it'd have nothing per se to do with cupcakes but just my cooking in general...

"Super mom?" Wrong blog! I swear, for every batch of cupcakes I bake (and every chocolate chip pancake, for that matter), I commit some horrible parenting faux pas that will scar them for life...

that's what I'm for - I'll hire the blind nuns to hand stitch the table cloths and fly to Bali if i have to to find the flowers for centerpieces to match BOTH of their gowns.

are there such things as earning "cupcake" points for later in their life (ie the teenage years) when you're the most wicked person on earth?

Besides if the boy eating bugs hasn't scarred them yet, nothing will.
